Cap. Times moves to online publishing, Madison freaks

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Holy crap. I’ve never seen so many people flip out because a newspaper was stopping daily printing and re-focusing as an online publication (with a twice-a-week print run, partially distributed with the other paper published in the joint-venture).

Yes, I understand the Capital Times was one of the last remaining afternoon newspapers in the country (and the better of the 2 papers in Madison) but times change. More people are reading news online versus in print anyway, so why doesn’t it makes sense that Madison’s progressive paper move to an online publication???

I’m seriously, by the way, asking that question. Why shouldn’t they go online? From my perspective, it makes perfect sense. You go where your readers are. If more people are reading online than in print, by all means, go online. Print media is going the way of the dinosaur. Besides, this is Madison, we’re all “down to earth” here and this will save countless numbers of trees and reduce the amount of paper that’s wasted publishing something people aren’t picking up anyway.

Snow Pictures

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Taken this morning out the side door of the apartment building… It was much worse last night, but I didn’t feel like going out and taking pictures when I got home from work. More pictures under the cut.

Snow

“It looked like a war zone”

Monday, January 7th, 2008

HUGE pile-up accident on I-39/90 outside Madison today. (more here) Last I heard 100 cars involved, 2 dead. This was all due to the dense fog in the area today and people driving way too fast for conditions.

I found out about a half-hour ago that one of our spotters in our storm spotter group is unaccounted for right now. He was (from our best guess) on the interstate right about when all of this happened on his way home from a work meeting.

Edit: 1/8 @ 1am: The missing spotter has been accounted for. No details provided to me other than “he’s shown up.”

Snow removal…

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Why is it so hard for the City of Madison to remove snow from the streets? Every other city has figured it out. Oh and it’s kind of funny that Mayor Dave Chislewicz, or however it’s spelled, is mad at the snow removal effort. Dude, grow a fucking pair. You think Mayor Daley down in Chicago would put up with inadequate snow removal? You’re the fucking mayor. MAKE SHIT HAPPEN.

See… The difference here is DALEY KNOWS HOW TO GET SHIT DONE! Oh and yes, I realize that Chicago is a hell of a lot bigger than Madison, but even the Village of Palatine does a better job. Hell, so did the City of Rockford.

It’s just plain stupid that several hours into a snow event and I’m being forced to drive on MAJOR ROADS that have been un-plowed. I talked to a friend who said the beltline hadn’t been touched during Tuesday’s snowstorm. Heck, it still hadn’t been plowed by the morning commute.

Ugh.. This is frustrating. Especially since we’re on storm #3 in a week.
