Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow Internet

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Seriously? FF is telling me a 3.8MB file would take me ~20 minutes to download when I started it. This is pro speed DSL? Um.. right… I could get faster downloads on a 56K dial-up I think right now. Most of Web 2.0 is useless to me at the moment. Hell, most of the web is useless to me at the moment.

Last I checked I had 320 Kb/s down, 413 Kb/s up. My pro DSL is supposed to be 3.0 Mb/s down, 512 Kb/s up. 320 Kb/s down, 413 Kb/s up isn’t even basic DSL speeds.

I ditched dial-up 10+ years ago because it was slow… No way in hell I’m tolerating this. If it’s not fixed by tomorrow AT&T is getting a phone call from me. (I’ve already submitted a complaint via DSLR’s AT&T Direct forum.)

I wonder if AT&T is messing with packets… Could be a strong case for why we need net neutrality in this country?!

More AT&T Woes

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

So this evening, my DSL has slowed to a crawl. I mean, I’m almost getting down to dial-up speeds… ok, so maybe not that slow, but still.

I did some DSLreports.com speed tests:

To Speakeasy NYC
d 316 Kb/s
u 404 Kb/s
l 68 ms

To Broadstar, Miami
d 292 Kb/s
u 396 Kb/s
l 84 ms

To NAC NJ
d 247 kb/sKB/s
u 355
l 75 ms

Those numbers are NOT typos. I’m actually getting more UP than down right now.

AT&T Issues…Again

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

So this morning I go to get on the internet and guess what… No connection. I’ll spare you the boring details but what it came down to was that my AT&T e-mail address had become unregistered from their system for God only knows what reason.

The nice friendly tech on AT&T Yahoo chat (thanks to whatever public wifi I was on!) was able to get things fixed, but only after 3 of them helped me because the public wifi kept flaking.

Internet Update

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Well… It’s back on. Yay! It only took me a week of dealing with AT&T’s customer service (most likely in India), an AT&T supervisor (most likely *not in India), and the AT&T Direct forum on DSLReports.com to get things up and running. And to think, all this work for a simple transfer of DSL from apartment a to apartment b. My god, if this had been a *new install, how long would I be waiting?

By the way, through this a few people have asked why I don’t just switch to Charter and get one of their “triple play” bundles instead. The short answer is, I’d rather deal with the crap that AT&T has put me through than to even think of giving Charter even 1 cent. This isn’t just a “jump on the bandwagon and hate Charter” deal either. I’ve seen from reports that my station’s consumer unit has taken that Charter just doesn’t understand how to do business, at all.

Update: Internet Situation

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

So they missed the Thursday 8pm deadline. Friday I called AT&T and demanded to speak with a supervisor. Well, it turns out that they completely lost my order and the original order to move service had been canceled. So they put in another order and told me it’d be on Monday at 8pm.

Well, yesterday I got a call from AT&T’s robot and it confirmed my install for Tuesday not Monday. WTF? Well as long as the damn thing gets turned on. I’m half tempted, though, to call AT&T’s customer service department up and demand they wave the $75 transfer fee since they fubared my install royally. I’m also going to file a complaint with the state of Wisconsin over how things were handled.

Anyway, we’ll see if they make Tuesday this week.
