Jonathan Coulton in concert…

What: Jonathan Coulton w/ Paul & Storm
Where: Majestic Theater - Madison, WI

I saw Jonathan Coulton in concert last night. It was a really good show, though I could have done with-out the idiots who were opening for him. It was a mixed bag of songs I knew, and songs I didn’t, which is good. For those asking, yes, he did play “Still Alive” and I have a feeling that 90% of the crowd only knew him because of that song, despite having several viral videos as well as numerous mentions on the various TWiT podcasts.

A few highlights:

  1. He asked “Does anyone in the audience have a power adapter for a 12in. Powerbook?” Normally, there’d be no one who did, but some chick up in the balcony DID have one at the show.
  2. In the middle of a song he was performing using a sample machine, he inserted “Never Gonna Give You Up”, there-by “Rick Rolling” the crowd.
  3. The openers asked if anyone had a 20 sided dice. I couldn’t count how many people did.

All-in-all, it was a very good show, and I’d highly recommend seeing him in concert.

Cap. Times moves to online publishing, Madison freaks

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Holy crap. I’ve never seen so many people flip out because a newspaper was stopping daily printing and re-focusing as an online publication (with a twice-a-week print run, partially distributed with the other paper published in the joint-venture).

Yes, I understand the Capital Times was one of the last remaining afternoon newspapers in the country (and the better of the 2 papers in Madison) but times change. More people are reading news online versus in print anyway, so why doesn’t it makes sense that Madison’s progressive paper move to an online publication???

I’m seriously, by the way, asking that question. Why shouldn’t they go online? From my perspective, it makes perfect sense. You go where your readers are. If more people are reading online than in print, by all means, go online. Print media is going the way of the dinosaur. Besides, this is Madison, we’re all “down to earth” here and this will save countless numbers of trees and reduce the amount of paper that’s wasted publishing something people aren’t picking up anyway.

Taken this morning out the side door of the apartment building… It was much worse last night, but I didn’t feel like going out and taking pictures when I got home from work. More pictures under the cut.

“It looked like a war zone”

Monday, January 7th, 2008

HUGE pile-up accident on I-39/90 outside Madison today. (more here) Last I heard 100 cars involved, 2 dead. This was all due to the dense fog in the area today and people driving way too fast for conditions.

I found out about a half-hour ago that one of our spotters in our storm spotter group is unaccounted for right now. He was (from our best guess) on the interstate right about when all of this happened on his way home from a work meeting.

Edit: 1/8 @ 1am: The missing spotter has been accounted for. No details provided to me other than “he’s shown up.”
